Good thing I stopped to pee! Just off of the Bolinas-Fairfax Rd, past the resevoir, I stumbled upon a fairy glade…with my treat of the trip, seeing these mission bells, or Fritillaria affinis, in bloom.
Very little is know about the ecology of these lilies. According to Calflora, they are quite widespread throughout California, but are evidently morphologically quite variable. They also hybridize with other related Fritillarias.
